FLOOKIES TARTAN SET | 8

A fabulous piece of New Zealand fashion history, this striking vintage Flookies two piece is a wonderful example of the distinctive style of NZ fashion from the 1970s/80s.

The set has a particularly beautiful black bodice, creating a dramatic contrast with the delicate, lightweight tartan fabric. The tartan appears across the slightly sheer sleeves and the pleated matching skirt, with the same floaty tartan fabric forming the lower section of the skirt. The combination of rich black and soft, airy tartan is incredibly effective and gives the outfit a sophisticated yet playful vintage feel.

The top features large statement buttons running down the front, while a zip fastening at the back completes the fitted silhouette. The matching skirt is beautifully pleated, allowing the lightweight tartan fabric to move and float as you walk.

Flookies Fashions was an Auckland-based New Zealand fashion label associated with designer and tailor Dorothy “Kay” Kent, who was active in the NZ fashion industry during the 1970s and 1980s. Historical records place Flookies among the established names of New Zealand fashion during this period, alongside labels such as Elle, Jag, Hullabaloo, Jennifer Dean and Zambesi.

Records also show Flookies Fashions Ltd participating in New Zealand's textile industry licensing system in 1981, providing a fascinating glimpse into the company's place within the country's fashion and clothing industry.
