Plummer Hats was established in Auckland around 1877 by Charles Plummer and his wife, Leah. The company grew into one of New Zealand's notable hat manufacturers, producing fashionable millinery inspired by international trends from Paris, London and beyond. During the mid-20th century, hats were an essential accessory for a well dressed woman, completing outfits for everyday occasions, formal gatherings and evenings out. Plummer even held a licence to reproduce designs by celebrated London milliner Aage Thaarup.

The company's millinery department closed in 1971, making its surviving hats tangible reminders of a bygone era of skilled local craftsmanship and elegant dressing.
