Absolutely gorgeous original 1950s Roystyles dress in the sweetest bubble-gum pink and white cotton. Roystyles was a New Zealand label established in Auckland in 1945, and examples of their 1950s dresses are held in the New Zealand Fashion Museum collection. This style is quintessential 1950s New Zealand fashion, with the fitted bodice and lovely full skirt.
The dress has large buttons down the front and a beautifully full skirt with stiffening and lining, giving it that wonderful structured 1950s silhouette. It is such a classic style and incredibly cute on.
There are a few age-related issues worth noting. Structurally, the dress is in excellent condition. There is one small, very faint mark on the top of the shoulder. It could easily be covered with a brooch, or simply hidden by longer hair if you aren't bothered by it.
The original buttons have deteriorated slightly over time and have some age marks. They could be removed and replaced with complimentary buttons if desired. There is also plenty of fabric in the lining that could be used to recover the buttons, which would be a particularly lovely way to retain the original look. Alternatively, the buttons could be carefully removed and cleaned. I can't guarantee that cleaning would completely remove the marks, but it would certainly be worth trying for such a beautiful dress.
The waist currently measures 60cm. There is some flexibility here: by moving the buttons across, it could potentially be made approximately 6cm larger, depending on the desired fit.
A really special original New Zealand-made 1950s dress with a fabulous full skirt and plenty of vintage charm. The minor issues are reflected in the description, but overall this is a beautiful and very wearable piece of New Zealand fashion history.
